Queen Wilhelmina, who ruled the Netherlands for 50 years, donated this windmill to San Francisco in 1902. The surrounding tulip garden, named after her, makes its best run in the spring. But there are some things to keep in mind …
The Queen was never known to be anything other than fair and principled, but at certain times of the year (think tulips) she showed no patience with all sorts of activities that would later in the century become widespread in this City.
Especially feeding the hungry squirrels (creating large and dangerous clusters of the animals that plague many areas of the park today). And, as for tacking a sweet dog on the list ahead of a crazy fellow stamping on flower beds–let’s just assume that the Queen was a cat person, and leave it at that and enjoy the the view.
